THE GOD-FATHER

THE GOD-FATHER

The place is in dead silence. The only sound that can be heard is the brisk breathing of the young man who is sweating thoroughly all over his body. His past life is racing in his mind. He had never been happy in his life so far, living with a mother, who broke up with his father, when he was in very tender age and cares hardly about him.He being bullied by his fellow
classmates for poor performance in studies. He can do nothing but put his miserable and frustrated feelings in pen in the form of poems, which describe his screwed up life. He hid them as his valuable, secret treasures and as a blow to his fate his neighbouring young lady, whom he loves so passionately and secretly within himself is engaged to someone today, which made him lose all his hope in life. This is all his failure in every aspect of life.
Even the nature is maintaining silence to maintain equilibrium with his emotions. He has no more tears left in his eyes to help him express his grief. He collected all his courage to jump into the valley. Suddenly there is a drastic change in the behaviour of his surrounding nature. He could feel the breeze, carrying a coughing voice, blowing towards him fanning off his sweat. He is unaware of whereabouts of the sudden breeze and the coughing voice .He is sure that it is from a near place. He is afraid that he might be caught red handed by someone committing suicide. He obeyed the natural and so-called human tendency, started quest for the unknown in this deserted place. He temporarily forgot his predestined work of committing suicide.
To his astonishment he reached a place, where there stood a wooden house. It is decorated beautifully with flora. The voice kept quiet for a while and his curiosity increased to know residing in such a deserted place and stirred towards the door. He felt someone trying to reach him from behind. His instinct stimulated him to turn in the respective direction.
He inferred that he is an elderly man of 60. The mysterious man enquired,"Who are you?” The young man hesitated for a while and replied,"I am vivek,a bachelor, insearch of a rental room.” Then the old man looked at him acutely and questioned with a voice of suspision,"What made you come so far away from the city ?” Then vivek seemed to be prepared for the next answer. So he immediately replied,"I am an ornithologist.I want to reside in a peaceful place where I can do my research on birds in this valley without linking myself to the disturbances of the world.I was informed that here is a house sitting alone on this mountain valley. So do you have vacancy in this house?” Then the old man said,” I am sorry to say that there is no place in, for other person.I suggest you to go and search somewhereelse. And I think there is no other house to find here.”
Then vivek felt happy within thinking the old man has really believed in his story. He said,"So I am unlucky”,continued, “Don’t you feel lonely here? Secluded from the society?” Then the old man smiled and said, "The same answer which I have been giving since years. Moreover, pranked by many of them who learnt the reason. Let me explain it to you too."
"In the garden,
sitting alone,
even without a butterfly.
In the forest,
sitting alone,
without a tree.
Above the mountains,
sitting alone,
even without a stream.
Still,
I don’t feel lonely,
because somebody is with me,
yes, my God is with me."
This made vivek perturbed and uttered,” God! A damn he is! I don’t really think if he hardly exists. Unfortunately if he does, he might be enjoying all the luxuries of paradise and might be getting pleasure out of watching people suffering like me.” In addition, his voice sank in weeping and he collapsed on his kneels.
The old man who is in shock for his sudden action hesitated a while to console him, at the first moment but started soothing him when the young man’s sobbing increased gradually. Vivek set himself right after a while. Then the old man lead him into his house and he too obeyed like a child. It is clean and bright inside the house with the yellowish sunrays, from the setting Sun,penetrating through the open window. The air in the room is baring the fragrance of branded incense-stick and the pleasant music of the wind chimes. He felt pleasant with this sight. He urged Vivek to sit, in the wooden made sofa, beside him and sighed as if he is bound to explain everything to him.vivek relaxed himself and finished his story of failures in his entire life. Then the old man confirmed that his turn to speak has finally come but he did not speak of a single word. He told, “Please, help yourself with a glass of water. I will be back in few seconds,” showing him a pot sitting in the corner of the room and left towards an adjacent room. Vivek drank a glass of water and eagerly started waiting for the old man to take leave from him. He has completely forgotten his ritual of suicide.
Finally, the old man has come with a work piece of glass on which different colors of glass pieces arranged so beautifully. He told him,” This is an art piece made by my wife, when she was alive. The day has come to put it into some use.”vivek gave him a puzzled look, was irritated with the old man's peculiar behaviour.
Then the old man asked,” See through this blue piece and tell what you can observe.” Vivek did so and said,"I can see everything blue through it.”
“Through the red one?”
“Again everything in red.”
and he suddenly blew off ash on his face and asked,"And now?”
“I can see nothing.Everything is smoky.”
“So what do you understand?”
vivek little mystified, waited for the justification.
“When you look through a blue glass everything appears blue. If through a red glass, all red and bright. If through a smoky one, everything appears to be sad and dull. It is upto you to color your life with your own color. However, do not forget it’s just one life that we get to live and it is full of meaning. Life is a beauty that lies in the eyes of the beholder. All your situations are rotten to the core. They brought immense suffering to you,as you explained. However, remember that life is a curtain, which swings with the blow of experiences, then folds up one day. It is a book, every page revealing a new meaning of it. It is a color of excitement, shadows of remorse, repentance of guilt, tides of mood and situation. It’s a gift of God without any returns expected and it is upto you to make use of it in your own explicit and unambiguous way."
Vivek started thinking. He felt it to be truly fair, expressed a doubt,”Can I cope up with my situations?can you assure me?Life is not fair, isn’t it?"
"Life is not fair but God is good.I can’t say you can’t but I can say you can. And more over I am a replica of, none other than, you when I was young, who tried to respond in a similar way in a similar situation of failures. And I can assure you how I coped up with my situations.” Vivek asked, “ So who is the old man who saved you?” with a smile. “I too am lucky to have someone to save me,but it’s my conscious mind.It made me think positive and rescued me from death."
Vivek in return asked,“Can conscious mind help you, thinking in
contradictory to your subconscious mind?”
He replied, “It did to me,which implies,it is possible in everyone’s case.Because I too am a normal human like everyone.I was about to set off into a river, flowing next to a temple.I saw a butcher killing a goat to offer it to the God.And I had seen it’s struggling till it’s last breath.I was scared of the devil called death.None other than my conscious mind gave courage to fight to live than to end life in a dreadful and vulnerable way.”
Vivek was convinced by this and set out thanking the old man for his time and patience and finally expressed a doubt,"So may I have the pleasure to visit you soon?"
"Anytime, but possibly with a good news about your career,"smiled and bade good-bye. Years passed by.
Vivek was no longer young now.He is holding his baby in one hand and offered a bunch of flowers to the tomb lying infront of a house, where he came few years ago,the place of his enlightenment. The baby asked, “what is this ?and what’s there in it?”showing the tomb.vivek replied, “He is my God-father,who protected me from death.”
“And made your dad a successful poet, resting in it,”added his wife, for whom he tried to end up his life on one occasion.
“So he is my God-grand father, isn’t he?”said the baby. The couple laughed and replied, “Yes,”togther.
